Each year, on June 8th, the world celebrates World Oceans Day. People all around the globe get together to talk about the importance of the ocean, what it does for us on a daily basis, and what we can do for it on a global level to better protect it. In 2002, The Ocean Project began working in partnership with hundreds of organizations and networks all over the world to promote and coordinate World Oceans Day.
World Oceans Day was a proposed concept by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Since it's start in 2002, the celebration has grown from a handful of events to thousands of events globally.
Let me know how you plan to celebrate World Oceans Day, I'd love to hear all about it! I'll be kicking it off on Wednesday at the United By Blue Blue Note Speaker Series. To find an event near you or to host an event of your own (i.e. host a cleanup*, start on online campaign, create art), head to World Oceans Day for more information.
*Hosting a cleanup and need some kits? Head to United By Blue to purchase their $5 cleanup kit.
