Yes, you read that right. My plastic footprint is approximately 30% lower than the average American, but approximately 440% higher than those living in India. Though the usage is an estimate (when plugging in feminine product usage there is no selection of tampons and pads vs. the cup and when plugging in sexual wellness and hygiene products, there is no selection of glass bottles or plastic bottles), these results are still alarming.
Last night, I had the privilege of attending the United By Blue Blue Note Speaker Series at their flagship store. With speakers from the TTF Watershed (Tookany/Tacony-Frandford) and the Delaware Estuary, we discussed the detrimental effects of plastic pollution as well as the need to spread awareness about what's going on around us. We calculated our plastic footprint with rePurpose Global, we pledged to DRINK TAP over buying another single use plastic water bottle with PennEnvironment, and we talked about upcoming cleanups and so much more.
For those that don't know, the Delaware Estuary covers the areas from Philadelphia, to Hancock, NY, to Cape May, NJ, and Lewes, DE (where fresh water meets salt water). This is not just information for my local Philadelphia family and friends, but for FOUR different states on the east coast.
Take some time and check out all of these websites, calculate your plastic footprint, and leave me a comment below or head to the Facebook group to discuss what your results were. We'll chat solutions to lower our numbers and things we can start doing RIGHT NOW to help get more and more people aware of all that they do without even thinking.
